When it comes to publisher success, the importance of speed cannot be understated. Here are five concrete reasons you need to focus on mobile speed in 2018.
#1 Mobile-first indexing will arrive in 2018.
Google’s crawling, indexing, and ranking systems traditionally analyzed the desktop version of a page’s content. However, this means that mobile searchers are sometimes presented with results that might perform well on desktop, but poorly on mobile. Mobile browsing eclipsed desktop browsing in November 2016, and in response to this trend Google is going to prioritize mobile content for indexing and ranking.
The prominence of mobile-first indexing is going to intensify in 2018, and publishers need to be sure that they are offering speedy, high-performing mobile pages to rank well.
#2 Progressive Web Apps will become more prevalent, fuelling the appetite for speed.
Toward the end of 2017, Apple announced impending support for service workers. Their support of the powerful tech means that iOS users will soon experience the benefits of PWAs. This will see the revolutionary technology really take off in 2018, meaning that speed and UX enhancements it brings will become more commonplace and publications that fail to deliver will fall behind.

#3 3G connections are still standard.
70% of cellular network connections until 2020 will be on 3G or slower speeds. This information, coupled with the fact that 53% of readers abandon mobile websites that take longer than 3 seconds to load, shows that publishers must focus on providing blazingly fast experiences even on poor connections. Slow speeds and intermittent connectivity should not be a barrier to reaching your audience.
#4 We have a need for speed, and this will continue to grow.
Mobile users demand lightning-quick pagespeed. As readers around the world become more accustomed to faster speeds, capitalizing on performance pays off for publishers: mobile sites load in 5 seconds earn up to 2x more mobile ad revenue than those whose sites load in 19 seconds.
Those are four reasons that site speed is important for publishers. Inspired? Be sure to check out our previous post that gives you five ways to speed up your mobile website.
